Composting Programs

On-site school composting is an excellent way to reduce waste while teaching students about natural resources and the food system. If you're considering starting a composting program at your school, follow the steps below to get started. We know that launching a composting initiative can feel overwhelming, which is why our team is here to support you every step of the way.

Getting Started

Step 1: Build Your Team
Create a dedicated team for your school compost program. Your team should include at least one staff member and a minimum of five students from any grade level.

Step 2: Develop Your Plan
Establish a long-term plan for collecting, measuring, and maintaining compost and organic materials. This plan must be reviewed and approved by your principal and the Sustainability Office to ensure the program's longevity and success.

Step 3: Engage Your School Community
Communicate with and educate the school community about your composting initiative. Market the program throughout the school and explore fundraising opportunities to support ongoing operations.

Step 4: Launch Collection
Implement the program in the safest and most effective location for collecting organic scraps. Consider high-traffic areas like cafeterias while ensuring proper supervision and accessibility.

Step 5: Evaluate and Celebrate
After implementation, regularly evaluate your program's performance, make necessary adjustments, and celebrate your successes with the school community.
